Sustainable Tourism Destination Support

Whitsunday Regional Council “Healthy Heart” and ecoBiz Collaboration – 2023

The Whitsunday Regional Council, together with the Griffith Institute for Tourism (GIFT), created the “Healthy Heart” program to decarbonise the tourism sector and work towards attaining a Sustainable Destination accreditation for the region.

Business Chamber Queensland’s EcoBiz Program collaborates with “Healthy Heart” Project. Fiona supported industry engagement to promote both programs within the Whitsunday Region though presentations at a series of industry workshops, delivery of ecoBiz coaching sessions to assist businesses to implement sustainability initiatives and then shadow training of a Whitsunday region ecoBiz Coach.

Cod Hole and Ribbon Reef Operators Association (CHARROA) Coral Sea Marine Park Approvals and Infrastructure 2020 & 2018

2018 Consultancy Services resulted in successful Commonwealth Marine Park permit approval submissions for three CHARROA Marine Tourism Operators: Coral Expeditions, Spirit of Freedom, and Mike Ball Dive Expeditions and approval of an application to install CHARROA shared mooring infrastructure in the Coral Sea Marine Park.

In 2020 EcoPro assisted CHARROA to apply for a Department of Environment and Energy grant to secure funds for mooring infrastructure in the Coral Sea Marine Park. The success of the Commonwealth Grant enabled CHARROA to design and install environmentally sensitive moorings. The shared mooring infrastructure serves to future proof access to Coral Sea Dive sites for CHARROA members while safeguarding the reef site environments.

Austrian Rafting Federation and Cassowary Coast Regional Council: Bid for Australia to Host World White Water Rafting Championships – 2017

The Australian Rafting Federation (ARF) contracted EcoPro Consultancy to develop and draft the ARF Bid to host the IRF World Rafting Championship on the Tully River in 2019 with the IRF Pre-World Championship in May 2018.  The Cassowary Coast Council provided funding for the project, which was completed in consultation with Raging Thunder Adventures, the Australian Rafting Federation Committee and other key stakeholders. The detailed submission ensured race locations and logistics for a combination of disciplines  (including sprints, head-to-head, slalom and downriver) adhered to International Rafting Federation requirements and provided a Business Case Analysis that Cassowary Coast Council were able to utilise to support an application to TEQ for Major Event Funding.

The Bid to the International Rafting Federation was successful with over 300 of the world’s best rafters travelling to the Cassowary Coast for the 2018 and 2019 events. With teams from 19 countries competing, the events resulted in increased tourism visitation and visitor spend in the region.
